The Complete Guide to Senior Discounts

Directory of Senior Discounts for Frugal Citizens and Retirees Age 50 or Older

Getting Senior Discounts is one of the best benefits for frugal retired members of society or those age 50 or older.

As a senior citizen, you deserve some extra special deals. This extensive guide is going to help you find all the best retirement discounts and bargains.

If you are wondering how to get the best bargains or who offers them, this massive list is a great starting point.

But whether listed here or not, my best tip is to make it a habit to ask for a price cut wherever you spend your hard earned money.

Please do let me know if you find a great new deal for retirees which I do not already have listed below. I will then add your discovery so others can save more money too.

Following are some other important tips and points to ponder when trying to cash in on advertised or even unadvertised senior citizens discounts.

"For age and want, save while you may...no morning sun lasts a whole day."

- Benjamin Franklin

Portrait painting of Benjamin Franklin

  • "How old do you have to be to get senior discounts?"

The absolutely lowest cut off point for any senior discounts is usually age 50. But as you can see below there are quite a few more discounts available if you are age 50 to 55 or older. Most senior citizens discounts are focused toward those who are of retirement age or older than age 55.

  • It always pays to ask about discounts for seniors because you may be surprised to find that even at age 50 companies will allow you to take advantage of their senior passes or special senior programs.

  • Joining the AARP when you reach the age of 50 is a good idea because they have negotiated some nice deals for their members that someone below age 65 may not have otherwise qualified for.

To see the huge list of things the AARP has benefits and discounts for (such as discounts on services, stores, discounts on travel, rental cars, and restaurant discounts) you may like my Guide to AARP discounts and perks.

  • Check with your local supermarkets, retail stores, restaurants, or pharmacies to see if they offer seniors a discount on certain days of the week ("Senior Discount Days"). This is a little known secret. Senior discount day is usually not advertised. So you have to ask to find out if they have senior discount days when you might get an extra 10% or more off your purchase plus other perks. I would talk to the manager, rather than asking regular hourly employees though.

  • Always remember to carry a photo id with your birth date on it, such as your driver's liscence. And always have your AARP Passport Card, Golden Passport, Golden Age Passport, Senior Pass, or other discount card handy to flash and save. It is easy to forget to ask for your discount so make asking a habit so you don't forget and leave all that free money on the table. Tell your spouse to remind you to ask or tie a string around your finger;^).

  • For travel related discounts or when making large purchases always verify the senior discount that you will get in writing if possible and check for restrictions such as "Blackout Days" when a discount may not be made available such as during the busiest holiday or vacation season. In other words, read the small print and email or call ahead to verify the details.

  • Many hotel chains and restaurants have franchises with groups of independently owned locations which may have the option to not participate in certain promotions or discount programs. They often may apply their own restrictions or limitations. That is another example of why you will often see this note: "Restriction May Apply" or "Only Available at Participating Locations".

  • Watch out for the gotchas and find out the details behind phrases such as, "Up to 20 Off". That often means your discount is pro-rated to how much you spend and in some cases could mean 0% off, especially if you see the stipulation of "Minimum Purchase Required". Those are common gotchas that bait and switch lots of consumers into thinking they will get the full discount percent off. Do your homework ahead of time and you will not be unpleasantly surprised by a senior citizen discount that does not come to fruition.

"Which drug stores have senior citizens discounts?"

If you are like most senior citizens in America, you probably spend a significant amount of your limited retirement funds on over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and prescription medications which are expensive and often not covered by Medicare or Medicaid insurance.

Unfortunately retirement often means a lower fixed income just as health issues are becoming much more probable. So medical expense is a major concern for most senior citizens living on a tight budget.

Here's a few senior discounts and medical savings programs for seniors at major drug stores or pharmacy chains. I hope this helps you save lots of money. Please contact me below if you know of any other pharmacy chain discounts for senior citizens.

-FREE pharmacist consultation, including review of your medications, free pharmacy services, review of immunization needs, FREE blood pressure screening, and assistance with any Medicare Part D questions you may have.
-NOTE: On July 4th and July 11th (current year 2018), Wellness65+ members get 20% off nearly everything at Rite Aid.
-Seniors also earn wellness+ points on filled prescriptions
  2. Walgreens: Senior's Day at Walgreens on certain Tuesdays for 55 or older or AARP members for 20% off regular priced eligible in-store items (also, check previous link for current online shopping Walgreens coupon code discount, currently SENIOR20 for 20% off a checkout for home healthcare and incontenence products).

Cruise Lines With Senior Discounts

"What cruise lines offer senior citizen discounts?"

Check with your favorite cruise line or travel agent to see if senior citizens discounts may be available.

Often group deals can be arranged, especially for groups of seniors. Of course, AARP members are automatically part of a senior group of millions and get many discounts on not just cruises.

Here are just a few Cruise Lines I know of which have been known to offer AARP members discounts on cruises.

Often if AARP members get discounts, other non-member seniors can too. But the AARP is probably the best way to get the most off your cruise vacation if you are 50 or older. Non-AARP seniors often won't qualify until they reach at least age 62.

  1. Blount Small Ship Adventures

  2. Hurtigruten Cruise Lines

  3. MSC Cruises

  4. Norwegian Cruise Line

  5. Variety Cruises

Activities And Entertainment Senior Discounts

"What discounts can senior people get at movie theaters, gyms, parks, museums, and other activity destinations?"

I am glad you asked because one of the best things about being retired is that hopefully you finally have more time to enjoy health promoting leisurely activities. And you often get a healthy discount on the cost of doing them too.

Staying healthy no matter what age you are means staying fit, trim, active, and ever learning. Enjoying nature in the great outdoors is one of the most affordable ways to maintain or improve your health as you age. Those seniors enjoying the freedom and mobility of the RV lifestyle know well what I mean.

My best advice for rejuvinating your body and your soul is to regularly visit our beautiful national parks with your spouse, friends, children, or grand children. And retired or not, you can often do that at a big discount if you apply for your "Senior Pass" from the U.S. Government when you reach the age of 62.

A Senior Pass, or "Golden Age Pass" as it has been known, will entitle you to some big discounts on many types of ammenity fees at over 2,000 federally managed recreation sites in every state of the U.S.A.

For more details, check my guide on How to get a Senior Pass and find out what benefits come with it. It is one of the best sources of lifetime senior deals you can get!

Use the search box below to find out if this type of property tax discount is available in your state, county, or city. it could easily save you hundreds or thousands of dollars every year.

Check with your local electric coops, cell phone service provider, satelite TV, cable company, municipal trash pickup service, water provider, public transportation, sewage department, or phone carrier to see if they offer discounts for senior citizens. Search Strategies for Finding Even More Senior Discounts, Programs, and Benefits

There are literally tens of thousands of senior citizens discount programs in every state of the union - from the local store level all the way to the state and federal level.

As you likely already know, one of the best ways to find discounts is by searching for them online. Here are my two favorite search resources for finding who offers senior discounts.

Custom Google Search Engine for Finding Benefits and Deals for Senior Citizens

Below is my custom Google Search Engine which will find you millions of other generous senior citizens discounts.

Just type in a main keyword such as "senior discount coupons" or "discounts for retirees" within quotes and type the word "and" (not in quotes) followed by another more specific word in quotes, for example "Buffalo New York" or "Atlanta Georgia". This will help narrow down the results to best suit you.

You will find secret discounts in your local area that most of your fellow senior citizens or retirees never could have imagined were available.

Example Search: "senior discounts" and "restaurants" and "Tampa"

Search the United States Government's Main Website: USA.Gov

The U.S. Government has a terrific search engine at USA.gov that can help you find specific senior citizens discounts, passes, cards, programs, benefits, coupons, and deals specific to your local counties, cities, parks, travel destinations, and states. Just enter your keyword search into the search box and click the "search" button.

As an example, I tried searching for "senior citizen discount card california" and it returned 366,000 entries. The first page or two will probably have the most relevant results.

You can narrow the search results down by adding more specific words to your search such as senior discounts in your city, county, or state.

USA.gov is also the best way for senior citizens and retirees to search for unclaimed money you might be owed from various sources over the years. And it is also a great way to find cheap deals on anything from computers and vehicles to land and houses sold at a discount in government auctions.

Or search for financial assistance for housing, food, transportation, communications, utilities, loans, grants, or scholarships. You can also find a large number of government jobs you may qualify for and with special deference to senior citizen Americans.

Clicking the following link will open a new browser tab or window to the U.S. government home page with the search box being located at the top of thier website.

So for a gold mine of useful information related to retirement discounts and senior benefits for older American citizens explore USA.gov.

What Are Senior Citizens, How Many Senior Americans Are There, and How Can I Get AARP and Senior Pass Card Discounts?

  • What is a "Senior Citizen"?

The American definition of senior citizen is generally a person of relatively advanced age, or a person at or over the age of retirement. In the United Kingdom, the less flattering term of "old-age pensioner" is used to describe more senior members of society beyond the age of qualification for drawing a retirement pension. I think I'd prefer the American term of "senior". Other terms used in the American vernacular to describe senior citizens are: elders, golden agers, oldsters, and old-timers.

  • Since the year 1900 the percentage of the total American population age 65 or older has more than tripled from 4.1% of the U.S. population in the year 1900 to almost 13% of the U.S. population in the 2009 census. This means that in 2009, 1 in 8 Americans, or nearly 40 million people were age 65 or older.

  • There are now over 20 million people in America age 65 to 74; over 13 million Americans age 75 to 84; and over 5 million Americans age 85 or older.

  • The number of 100+ year old senior citizens in the 2009 census was over 70% greater than in the year 1990 - an increase from over 37,000 centenarians in 1990 to over 64,000 centenarians in 2009. You can be too young for senior discounts, but at least you can never be too old for them.

  • What is the AARP and how can I get AARP discounts?

AARP stands for "American Association of Retired Persons" and is a nonprofit membership organization you can join for only $16 a year once you reach age 50 or older. It is a must-do for frugal seniors interested in saving money on all sorts of purchases from travel to restaurants.

  • What is a Golden Age Passport and How Can I Get One?

A Golden Age Passport, also known as a "Senior Pass", is a discount card for senior citizens issued by the federal government. Like getting an AARP membership, getting your Senior Pass Card is a must-do for huge savings and senior discounts.

For all the details about the secret lifetime savings and how to get them, you may like my Guide on how to get your Senior Pass Card.

Disclaimer: This information about discounts for senior citizens is only meant as a starting point for you to do your own due diligence to confirm. I can not gaurantee the accuracy of this information because senior discounts often come and go and are subject to change without notice at any time and often include special terms, restrictions, and limitation about participating locations, items, and times. That is why I recommend you always call ahead to verify and get the details in writing (or quicker yet, by email), especially if you plan to plunck down a large amount on a vacation or high ticket item.
